What's in season in October?

Eating food when it’s in season not only means it tastes better, it’s also great for your health and the environment. Not to mention, in-season produce is often cheaper, especially when there is a glut! Apples, mushrooms, pumpkins and figs are all great seasonal options.

Apples
A good source of fibre, apples support digestive health. Their skin contains soluble fibre, which can help lower cholesterol levels. Enjoy them as a snack, sliced into porridge, added to salads, or baked into seasonal favourites such as crumbles and pies.

Mushrooms
October is peak mushroom season in the UK. Earthy, versatile and full of flavour, mushrooms provide B vitamins and minerals, including selenium. Add them to risottos, pasta dishes and stir-fries, or roast them alongside seasonal vegetables for a hearty autumn meal.

Pumpkins
Rich in vitamin A from beta-carotene, pumpkin helps support normal immune function. A seasonal favourite, it can be roasted, blended into soups, added to curries, or used in traybakes. With thousands of tonnes of pumpkins wasted each Halloween, don’t discard yours!

Figs
Naturally sweet and packed with fibre, figs make a delicious addition to autumn meals. Enjoy them fresh as a snack, paired with yoghurt, added to salads with cheese and nuts, or roasted to bring out their rich flavour in seasonal desserts.
